"The Circle"

In a world where men are taught to be strong and silent and that mental health is a weakness, a group of Black men find an ancient solution to a modern crisis: a powerful “Talk Circle”, where they can find solace by being vulnerable and by speaking from the heart. The Talk Circle is a private place to share your thoughts and feelings. Speak from your heart…listen from your heart.

Mental health is a serious issue within the black community, and it deserves greater attention. The Circle is a film dedicated to fostering open dialogue about mental health challenges and solutions through the powerful medium of a talk circle.

The Challenge: Breaking the Silence

Mental health is a universal right, yet for Black men, it is often a silent struggle. Left unaddressed, these issues contribute to a cycle of substance abuse, social isolation, and family conflict. We are producing a film that moves beyond “awareness” to provide a genuine roadmap for healing.  Through the lived experiences of the participants, The Circle confronts the core themes of the Black mental health experience.

“The Circle” offers a functional intervention that utilizes real-life stories and lived experiences to provide a visible blueprint for healing, actively dismantling the systemic and cultural barriers that have historically blocked Black men from seeking life-saving mental health support.”

“We aren’t just making a film. We are building a gateway to wellness for a population that has been taught to suffer in silence.”

Mental Health Themes Explored:

  • Misogyny
  • Depression, isolation, and emotional dysregulation
  • Self-awareness and the journey toward forgiveness of self and others
  • Society’s impact on mental health and the dangers of ignoring these issues

Mental health is a pressing issue that, when left unaddressed, can lead to harmful coping mechanisms like substance abuse, smoking, or excessive drinking, and cause social and family conflicts. The Circle promotes open conversation as a crucial first step in acknowledging and addressing these challenges, helping participants and viewers alike find meaningful solutions.
